SPRINGFIELD ELKS HONOR LOCAL SCHOLARS

Recently, Springfield Elks Lodge 1560 awarded six scholarships to local area high school students going on to further their education this fall.  There also was a Vt. State Elks scholarship winner of $1000.  The local scholarship winners were given out by Springfield Elks Lodge Scholarship chairman Jackie Driscoll-Page and Exalted Ruler Vicki Siliski.  Jackie mentioned that this years applications were way over the top as far as participation and well thought out essays.  She had over twenty young people apply.  The Elks Lodge members are proud to be able to make these awards and Jackie Driscoll-Page and her committee put a lot of thought into the judging.
    The Springfield Scholarship winners receiving $500 each were as follows. Sarah Martel of Green Mt. Union HS atteding University of Maine.  She is the daugthter of Ray & Kathy Martel of Proctorsville, Vt.   Parker Day of Springfield High School will be attending Keene State College and he is the son of Kevin & Peggy Day of Springfield, Vt.  Morgan Collins of Black River HS will be attending St. Michaels College in Burlington, Vt.  He is the son of Peter and Rayelin Collins of Mount Holley, Vt.  Robert Haseltine of Green Mt. Union HS and will be attending Paul Smiths College.  He is the son of Mary Ellen and Mathew Haseltine,  of Chester, Vt.  Elizabeth Mackenzzie of Springfield High School will be attending the Universigty of New Hampshire and her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Barry Mackenzie.  Noah Distefano of Green Mt. Union HS will be attendingthe University of North Carolina.  His parents are Mr. and Mrs Randall Distefano of Grafton, Vt.  The Vt. State Elks $1000 scholarship was awarded to Heather Morse of Green Mt. Union HS and the daughter of Kelly Sinclair.

VERMONT ELKS “MOST VALUABLE STUDENT” 2014 SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT

The Vermont Elks Association Scholarship Committee met at Barre Lodge #1535 on Sunday, January 19, 2014 to judge the 50 “Most Valuable Student” brochures received.  I would like to thank all 8 of the Elk members that traveled to Barre during inclement weather from the various lodges to judge the scholarships and for their support of this worthwhile project.

The Vermont “Most Valuable Student” winners and their sponsoring Lodges were Kristen Switzer, Rutland Lodge, Bhumika Patel, Bennington Lodge, Brett Elliot, St. Johnsbury Lodge and Taylor Marquis, St. Albans Lodge.  Their brochures have been forwarded to the Elks National Foundation Judging Committee for evaluation at the national level where they will be awarded at least $4,000.00 over four years.  Vermont’s quota to the Elks National Foundation is four students, two boys and two girls.

From the remaining brochures, we selected the highest score from each of the participating 11 Lodges and awarded a $1,000.00 scholarship to each for one year.  After that was completed, money for six more awards was available, and the committee selected the next highest scores for these supplemental awards.  A total of $17,000.00 was awarded again this year. We were also very pleased to have 4 applications for the Roger S. Sheridan scholarship. This year’s winner was Christopher P. McAuliffe from Brattleboro Lodge.

Thank you to each of the Lodge Scholarship Chairpersons for their participation this year.  Your efforts are what make this program a success.

Back to School with Elks National Foundation Scholarships

Chicago, Ill – The cost of education continues to rise. For many students entering college, this means getting a job to help pay for school. For others, higher costs mean sacrificing their dream school. Thanks to their Elks National Foundation scholarships, 500 freshmen started college this fall with fewer financial worries. Through the 2014 Most Valuable Student scholarship contest, 500 current high school seniors will be able to start college next year with less stress, too.

This year, the Elks National Foundation is investing in our nation’s future by awarding $3.74 million in college scholarships. We’ve invested wisely. MVS scholars-all of whom demonstrate scholarship, leadership and financial need-are graduating from college at a rate of 90 percent, nearly 40 percent higher than the national average.

Through the contest, the ENF will award 20 top scholarships ranging from $20,000 to $50,000. The remaining 480 runners-up will receive $4,000 scholarships.

“I am moved not only by the Elks’ extraordinary vision and generosity, but also by the strong sense of community and commitment to service,” says 2013 top scholarship winner Grace Young, who is attending
Harvard University this fall. “I am honored to be a part of the Elks family.”

The MVS scholarship is available to all high school seniors who are United States citizens. Applicants do not need to be related to a member of the Elks. Males and females compete separately, and are judged on
scholarship, leadership and financial need. Completed applications must be turned into the applicant’s nearest Elks Lodge no later than December 6, 2013. The 500 national winners will be announced in late April2014, after the top 20 finalists participate in a Leadership Weekend in Chicago.
